Bedford Monument

Bedford, QUE.

On May 7th, 1919, the following communication was received from the Bedford Patriotic Knitting Club to the Mayor and Councillors of the Corporation of the Town of Bedford:

"Gentlemen,

The members of the Bedford Patriotic Knitting Club ask persmission of your honourable body to erect a drinking fountain or watering trough, and some sort of a suitable memorial in honour of our brave men who served their King and Country overseas.

The Club already has on hand the sum of $300.00 for this purpose and will endeavour to raise such further amount as may be required.

The above mentioned drinking fountain or watering trough and memorial to be erected on the square in front of the County Building and erected under the supervision of the Mayor or other person appointed by the Council for the purpose."

It was resolved that permission be granted the Bedford Patriotic Knitting Club as per their request that the Mayor and Councillors Pare and Corey be a committee of the Knitting Club in carrying out the aforementioned plans. A monument was erected and the ceremony of the "Unveiling" was held on June 26th 1920 commencing at one o'clock. The opening remarks were by the Rev. R. Lewis Whitley and the unveiling was performed by Brig. General D.C. Draper. Since that time the cenotaph has been re-located in front of the county building.

The following names of the soldiers, seamen and airmen killed during the two world wars are inscribed on the monument.
