Village of Thamesville Cenotaph

Chatham - Kent, Ontario

A Committee formed by caring residents of Thamesville and Area, worked hard to have this Cenotaph, which was carved from a single piece of gray granite by the Thompson Memorial Company of Toronto, Erected in time for the Remembrance Day Services of 1936. It sits on a two-foot slab of Granite and rises to a height of twelve feet. It was placed near the main intersection of the Village, on the grounds of the Thamesville "Town Hall".

Above the altar on the face of the stone is a flaming torch, a symbol of sacrifice, with the inscription, "TO PERPETUATE THE MEMORY OF OUR HONOURED DEAD AND THOSE WHO CARRIED ON IN THE GREAT WAR. 1914 - 1918 " On the Base was carved
"YPRES >< MONS" After WWII an "S" was added to WAR and at the bottom, was added "1939 - 1945"

On the rear of the stone, there is carved a sword, below which has the words, "THEY DREW THE SWORD FOR LIBERTY AND PEACE" and later below that was added, "KOREA 1950 - 1953"

The "Cenotaph Committee" took care of the Monument until it was turned over to the newly formed Legion Branch, 367 that was established in 1946, which has taken care of it since.
