World War One Cenotaph

 
Sudbury, Ontario

Constructed in 1928 in memory of those who gave their lives in World War I. This Cenotaph still stands and is maintained by Branch 76, Royal Canadian Legion. It is no longer used for Remembrance Day Services, but wreaths are placed there regularly by Legion members.

This Cenotaph was unveiled and dedicated on August 20, 1928, by General A.H. Bell. The following verse is inscribed on a bronze plaque:

"They died the noblest death that men may die
Fighting for God and Right and Liberty,
And such a death is immortality"

Also inscribed are the names of battles of the war: Mons, Ypres, Valenciennes, Cambria, Hill 70, Marne, Verdun, Somme, and Arras.
