Clayton Cenotaph

Clayton, Ontario

The Cenotaph was dedicated on November 11, 1998, in memory of the men of Clayton and District who sacrificed their lives in defence of freedom and justice.

In 1997, Mrs. Thelma Gourlay approached Branch 240, The Royal Canadian Legion in Almonte requesting assistance to erect a Monument in the Village of Clayton, Ontario to immortalize those men from Clayton and District who paid the Supreme Sacrifice for our freedom. A Legion member (Comrade Lt. Edmonds) designed the Cenotaph, Joey Edmonds built the Memorial and the Legion provided the funds and the bronze plaque mounted on the Monument. Community members were fully supportive of this initiative and also provided funds which were raised through various undertakings. Branch #240, Royal Canadian Legion conducts a Remembrance Day Parade/Ceremony at this site annually.
