Belgian Veterans War Memorial

Winnipeg, Manitoba

The Belgian Veterans War Memorial was constructed in 1938 in memory of the Belgian and allied service men and women who died in WWI, WWII, and Korea.

The War Monument was designed and erected by local artist A. Granier in 1938. Restoration took place in 1995 by Alfred Wilmer, restorer of heritage structures.
The soldier standing symbolizes those who survived the wars and the soldier laying on the ground symbolizes those who gave their lives. The Monument is the focus of the annual Belgian Independence Day Parade and Wreath laying on July 21. Inscribed on the monument are the dates of World War I, World War II, and the Korean War.
The upkeep of the grounds is done by the City of Winnipeg Parks Board. The monument was declared a historical War Memorial by the City of Winnipeg Heritage Department.
