West Vancouver Memorial Arch

Arch Service

1900 Blk. Marine Dr., West Vancouver, British Columbia

Constructed in Memory of West Vancouver residents who lost their lives in World Wars I and II.

A population of approximately 3,000 raised enough money to build the Cenotaph on land donated by the Municipality. The Duncan Lawson Chapter, Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire, were primarily responsible for raising the money. The Memorial Cenotaph was unveiled on Dec. 31, 1925, by Baron Byng of Vimy, Governor-General of Canada. On Dec. 9, 1979, two granite plinths, with names of those who lost their lives in World War II, was installed in front of the cenotaph. Up to the early 1950's, The I.O.D.E. and the Royal Canadian Legion organized the Remembrance Day Ceremony. Since then, West Vancouver Branch 60 of the Royal Canadian Legion, has carried on this tradition.
