Lacombe, Alberta. Constructed in 1924 in
memory of veterans of WWI by the Lest We Forget
Club of Lacombe.
The monument was constructed in 1924 and
maintained for its initial years by the Lest We
Forget Club. It was turned over to the Town of
Lacombe who continue to maintain it as part of
the grounds of the Lacombe Memorial Center.
When one begins to examine the monument, one
cannot help but be startled by the sheer numbers
of individuals from the community who lost their
lives in the World War I. There are 72 names
inscribed on the cenotaph, this from a community
with an estimated population of only 2,500 in
1912. This mortality rate was ultimately a
contributing factor to Lacombe's loss of vitality
in the 1920's when it lost to Red Deer its
status as the pre-eminent community between
Calgary and Edmonton.
