Bowden Cenotaph

Bowden, Alberta

Constructed in 1946-1947 in memory of those who served in the Canadian Armed Forces during 1914-1918 and 1939-1945.

In 1946-1947, the rock shown in the above picture was brought from the Rex Waddell Farm and erected on Highway #2 as a Cenotaph for Bowden. In 1958, it was refurbished and moved to the local school. In 1958, a Commemorative plaque was placed below the original plaque. In November, 1988, due to the time and the elements, Mason Vic Greaves refurbished the cenotaph with split rock and mortar.

Many Remembrance Day wreath laying services have been held at the Cenotaph. Branch #83 of the Royal Canadian Legion, that erected the Cenotaph, gave up its charter id in 1992, due to a declining membership.

The inscription on the plaque is as follows:

1914-1918   1939-1945
IN PROUD AND LOVING MEMORY
OF ALL WHO DIED AND OF THOSE
WHO FAITHFULLY SERVED IN
DEFENCE OF FREEDOM.
"THEIR NAME LIVETH FOREVERMORE"
ERECTED BY BOWDEN BRANCH #83
CANADIAN LEGION, B.E.S.L.

The inscription on the lower plaque of the Cenotaph is as follows:

HERE CHILDREN PAUSE, WITH GRATITUDE AND PRIDE
REMEMBER THOSE WHO FOUGHT FOR YOU AND DIED.

The picture above was taken at the re-dedication service of
the Bowden Cenotaph on Remembrance Day, November 11, 1988.
