The .01 rule refers to the fact that we need two points to determine slope. Since instantaneous rate of change refers to the rate at one instant it is essential to get another point very close to that one so we can approximate the slope of the tangent line at that point. Therefore, students are advised to take the point they are given and also to consider another point which is .01 away from the original.
