Software is available on the Internet in a variety of forms: Freeware, Shareware, and Commercial/Retail Programs.

The easiest to acquire is freeware. This is software that has been made available by the author/developer free of charge. All that is required is for you to download and install the program on your computer.

Take a look at these freeware programs:

Mathematics Worksheet Factory Lite Download this free Math Worksheet software package. Easy to use. For grades K-6.

Dollar Bill's Adventures with Money : Uses money to teach the various math concepts (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, place value, etc.) within real-world contexts. Suitable for grades 1-5.

Another type of software on the Internet is shareware, usually distributed by the author/developer or an agent. This software is free for download. However, if you install the program and use it beyond its trial evaluation period, you are expected to pay a fee for continued use. In some cases, the shareware program will become disabled after the trial period expires, unless you purchase a licensed version. In other cases, the trial version is only a partial program, with some features disabled. Again, payment must be made to the author/developer to get a fully functional version of the program.

Try these shareware programs:

Mathematics Worksheet Factory Deluxe : Download a free trial version of this program. This is suitable for grades 1-8. The registration fee after the trial period is $25US.

Pedagoguery Software Inc. offers 4 math programs (free fully-functional evaluation versions) for download:  GRAFEQ (an equation graphing program), Poly (a program for exploring and constructing paper models of polyhedra), Poly Pro (an enhanced version of Poly that adds three-dimensional export capabilities), and Tess (a program for producing symmetric planar illustrations). Suitable for grades 6 and up. Prices start at $28US and depend on the type of license purchased.

HandyGraph is a great tool for teachers. It allows you to create blank graphs, grids, and number lines within Microsoft® Word. This is a demo version. Registration, enabling all features, costs $21.95US.

Some regular retail software distributors also provide their products through the Internet. By visiting the software company's website and arranging payment, a fully functional and registered version of the program can be downloaded and installed on your computer system. Some companies are now offering time-limited trials, after which payment must be made to obtain a key-code or serial number to allow further use while others require an immediate purchase agreement.

Have a look at some of these popular retail mathematics programs:

BasketMath : BasketMath© is an arcade style mathematics test presented in a basketball game format. The object of the game is for the home team to score more points than the visiting team, while completing a mathematics test. As your child takes the test, each question answered correctly results in a color animation of a successful goal shot and an increase in the home team's score. With each incorrect answer given, the correct answer is displayed and an animation shows a missed basket. The visiting team then scores. There is an elementary school version and a junior-senior high version.

MathType : MathType™ is a powerful interactive tool for Windows and Macintosh that lets you create mathematical notation for word processing and desktop publishing documents, web pages, and presentations. It contains features that allow one to customize it to their specific needs, and it is very versatile. A good teacher resource.

Many math-related sites on the Internet maintain lists of software links which are good starting points for general software searching. Any of the lists below contain a number of good programs for use in K-12 classrooms.

ALGEBRA Software to Assist in Learning Algebra is a collection of free algebra learning modules suitable for grades 8-10.

Math Forum - Computer Software for Math Education provides their list of Recommended Online Archives.

Yahoo! Mathematics Software Directory is a collection of math software in a number of subcategories as sorted by Yahoo!

Math Archives maintains archives of public domain and shareware programs in Macintosh Software , PC Software , and Other K-12 Software Sites.

Kid's Domain has lists of freeware at PC Math downloads and MAC Math downloads.
