variety of educational, informational, and support services for persons concerned with the
education of exceptional children. The (CEC) maintains an information center on the
education of handicapped and gifted children; sponsors a variety of gatherings (CEC Professional Development Events)
ranging from international conferences to local training institutes for educators of
exceptional children; monitors, coordinates and implements national, State, and local
policies affecting special education; serves as a major publisher of literature relating
to exceptional children; and provides many opportunities for involvement in organizations
affecting the lives of these children. The CEC encompasses 17 divisions, including
divisions for the physically handicapped, the visually handicapped, children with behavior
disorders, the mentally retarded, children with communication disorders, and children with
learning disabilities, among others.

Resources (ECER) information service and the ERIC
Clearinghouse on Disabilities and Gifted Education. ECER is a comprehensive source of
information on exceptional children. The database includes nearly 63,000 articles, with
about 3000 additions monthly. Custom computer searches of the database and computer search
reprints are both available for a fee. The ERIC Clearinghouse produces information
analysis products, digests, computer search reprints, and an information bulletin.
