Stanley the Beaver
A stuffed beaver from New Brunswick, travelling around the world, visited our class during the last week of school (June,1997). His name was Stanley (named after his school, "Stanley Elementary") and the boys and girls in my 1996-7 grade 3 class had a wonderful time showing him around our school and having him "participate" in such activities as: "Sports Day", visiting the school library, and helping do research in our computer room re: New Brunswick, Newfoundland, beavers, John Cabot and The Matthew.
The children then wrote letters to the boys and girls in Mr. Ian MacBean's class thanking them for sending Stanley and telling about some of his adventures while here in Newfoundland. They also wrote letters to Stanley telling him some things about themselves and their community.
All in all it was a very enriching experience for everyone. Before coming to us Stanley had also been to Australia, Finland and finally, Israel. When his box arrived it was filled with various pictures, drawings, stories, flags and souvenir pins that were shared out among the students.
As the host teacher I was inspired to host another guest to our school and so this year I welcomed "Poss," from Austral Public School in Australia. Check out the following story and read about "his" visit to my 1997-8 Grade 5 class!
