Welcome to my Home Page

John Sooley's

I was born on July 4th, 19?? at Markland Cottage Hospital, the sixth child of George and Marjorie Sooley(nee Pitts). My hometown was and is Heart's Delight-Islington. St. Matthew's Anglican School housed me through to the eighth grade.

I attended Holy Trinity Regional High in Heart's Content and graduated with the June, 1969 class. Then,I entered Memorial University in September of the same year. Although, my interest was science, the Education Faculty became my fate.

I obtained a teaching position with the Port aux Basques Integrated School Board in September, 1973 and have made Port aux Basques my home ever since. A Bachelor of Education was conferred upon me in 1977 and a Bachelor of Arts in 1992. Also, a Certificate Programme of Newfoundland Studies was obtained in May, 1997. At present, I teach grade six at St. James' Elementary School.

Some of my in-school interests are computers, the science program, science fair, maximizing school facilities and UNICEF. Out-of-school hobbies include fishing, reading, carpentry and cross country skiing.

My wife Elaine and I, are the proud parents of three grown children: Sonya, Michael and Adam.

We own a summer cottage in Heart's Delight-Islington and reside there most summers.

It now bears reminding that Heart's Delight and Islington became one town when they incorporated on October the 24th, 1972 and the town motto is " Together We Grow"

Here is a picture of my father in his army fatiques. My brother Rick, living in Labrador City, sent it to me as an attachment and I thought I might include it on my home page. George Sooley served in the Second World War and saw action in Italy. He came home an invalid and died an early death on December the 7th, 1964 at the age of 43.
