Gros Morne National Park is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site for its exceptional beauty and unique geological features. A number of landlocked fjords, carved by glaciers and formed by tectonic upheaval, meander through the land. The Tablelands offer more than 65 kilometers of mountain climbing. From leisurely strolls to challenging treks through rock formations that came from the centre of the earth.
Thousands of years ago, pillow lava formed deep beneath the ocean surface as lava seeped through cracks in the ocean floor and hardened in the cool water. Pillow lavas can now be seen along the coast. Along the coastline, volcanic rock provides nutrient rich soil for the coastal meadows. Each year the park attracts botanists, geologists and other scientists intrigued by the wide variety of natural resources available for study.

Whale watching in the waters of Newfoundland and Labrador will literally take your breath away. During one of the many tours available throughout the province, majestic humpbacks might breach, lifting their 36 tonnes completely out of the water. You may be lucky and shoot (your camera that is) a humpback, fin, sperm or minke whale, a harbour purpoise, or a saddleback dolphin. And if that's not enough, there are plenty of other things to watch: moose, caribou, beaver, bear, otter, auk and literally hundreds of species of birds and animals unique to this province. There are wildlife sanctuaries to visit, nature trails to walk, and fishing to drive you wild.

Generations of our citizens have spent their lives by the sea, in isolated villages, weaving and knitting the clothes that got them through the harsh winters. Over the years, many skills and traditions have been passed from one generation to another. One-of-a-kind works in wood, soapstone, whale bone and antler show the influence of First Nation and European culture.
Today, the province is rife with distinctive, handcrafted art from handloomed blankets, polished soapstone sculptures, and wool longjohns, to Innu tea-dolls. Each of the historic crafts captures the essence of our heritage. Also, Grenfell products - from uniquely designed floor mats to embroidered cloth parkers, mitts and slippers - are made in the province. Grenfell products are known and recognized around the world. Most of our crafts are available at dozens of special craft shows held during the year, at hundreds of craft shops throughout the province, or by mail. If you want more information, see below.
