![]() Dear Parents/Guardians, Have you ever heard of Groundhog Day? According to legend, the groundhog comes out from his burrow on February 2nd to see if he can see his shadow. As the folklore goes, if he sees his shadow there will six more weeks of winter. However, if he is not able to see his shadow, we can expect an early spring. What do you think? Could an animal predict spring? The most famous USA groundhog is of course Punxsatawney Phil. In Canada, the very famous Wiarton Willie gets most of the attention. Until NOW! Beginning on February 2 your child will be participating in a special Internet project called Project Groundhog. We will go outside on Monday to look for shadows and will submit the results over the Internet at the Project Groundhog Website. Then, for the next 6 weeks we will be recording the weather and sharing the information with other schools across USA and Canada. Our objective is to determine if we can rely on the groundhog legend. We are engaged... we are scientists! While there are over 100 classes involved, we will work closely with six other groups. Our first task is to come up with a unique name for our classroom groundhog, sorry Punxsatawney and Wiarton are taken! Please help your child to come up with a good name, fill out the form below and return to school. The class will vote on a name for our groundhog. If you would like to follow along with the project visit http://www.projectgroundhog.net Sincerely, -------------------------------------------cut--------------------------------------------------- Project Groundhog 2009 Child's name
