Background of the NLAGC
In 1979 a group of educators and parents from the
St. John's area began meeting to discuss possible solutions to the educational
problems experienced by gifted children. For a while the group sponsored a Saturday
enrichment activity program for gifted children, but it soon became apparent that
extracuricular activities were not sufficient to meet these children's needs.
This realization prompted the formation of the Newfoundland and Labrador Association
for Gifted Children (NLAGC) in 1980. To keep informed of national developments
concerning gifted children, NLAGC affiliated with the Association for Bright Children
(ABC), a Canadian organization with branches in almost ever province.
NLAGC is a non-profit organization constituted to assist the gifted children and youth of Newfoundland and Labrador to realize their potential. It is dedicated to the task of having the educational needs of gifted children recognized and accomodated within the province's educational system. Membership in NLAGC is open to anyone interested in the development of gifted children and youth.
