After much discussion with e-teachers and investigation into what is happening in the various districts around the province we have come up with a plan for midyear exams/cumulative testing that will hopefully fit into everyone's plans and at the same time provide some flexibility to the schools. This plan will reduce the amount of lost instructional time and increase time on task.Since districts have set aside the period from January 25 to January 29 for midterm/cumulative testing, we have decided to administer our exams basically during the same time period with a few select exams beginning on the Friday before exam week. This was necessary to accommodate the number of different exams and avoid many student exam conflicts which resulted from a blending of various exam schedules. We have developed a fixed/flexible schedule which schools can use. In other words, we have developed a fixed schedule which we hope most schools can follow or use as a guideline for administration of exams. However, we do realize that weather or other factors may play havoc with this schedule and in these cases we ask schools to fit our exams in wherever they can during that exam week. Our preference, for security reasons, would be that schools write missed exams as close to the fixed schedule date as possible. If your school has a fixed formal exam schedule during that week, then we request that you integrate our fixed schedule with your own to ensure that CDLI exams are written concurrently in all CDLI schools and security of exams is maintained. However, if for weather or other reasons, your midterm/cumulative testing schedule does not follow the fixed schedule we have provided then we will need your help in maintaining the security and validity of the exam materials. Following the procedures outlined in this document will guarantee this result. If your school does not have a designated mid-year exam week, then we request that CDLI exams be scheduled for the same week (Jan 22-Jan 29). There are two available options. You may choose to allow students to write the exam in one sitting or you may choose to stick with periods (online or offline) designated for CDLI courses in your schedule. Firstly, you may choose to administer the two part exam in two consecutive CDLI time slots (e.g. Slots A and B on Day 8). Or, secondly, you may administer the exam in two periods of the same timeslot within the narrowest possible time frame (e.g. Slot A on Day 8 Period 1 and Slot A on Day 9 Period 3). Both options afford administration of exams with minimal infringement on the teaching time of your face to face teachers. Again, schools have the flexibility of administering the exam in either one sitting or two. However, due to security reasons, we do request that schools follow the fixed schedule as closely as possible. The only exception we have to the above scenario is Math 3103 (Slot E) which has been semesterized. The exam for this course is not a midyear exam but a final exam. In this case we expect this exam to be written in one sitting and it will be 3 hours in duration. At the discretion of the school some extra time may be given. Normally, the policy of 10 minutes per hour is a good guideline to follow. We hope schools can accommodate this request.By providing this fixed/flexible schedule we hope to do a number of things:1) Reduce the loss of instructional time. 2) Provide some guidance to schools with formal midyear exams while allowing some flexibility. 3) For schools without midyear exams, CDLI exams can stay within the CDLI schedule. Since CDLI classes often cross district boundaries, we do need your help in maintaining the security of exams and the validity of results.Exams will be sent electronically to the schools on or before Wednesday, January 20th, 2010, using the exam dropbox. Instructions for M-teams 1) Please call the e-teacher directly if you have any trouble accessing the exam materials. 2) M-teams should print off the exams on CDLI equipment at least 24 hours before they are to be written (for clarity and security) and store them in a secure place until the day of administration. 3) M-teams must collect all exam materials, including scrap paper, so that copies of questions cannot be carried outside the exam room and shared with other schools/districts. 4) M-teams must ensure all exams are monitored and supervised continuously from beginning to end. 5) M-teams must ensure that the scanning of exams for return to the e-teacher is done by a member of the m-team. The attached file is to be returned to the e-teacher using the exam dropbox. Under no circumstances should it be sent using a student email account or saved on a machine that students can access as this would give the student access to the exam electronically in their sent mail which could then be forwarded to other students across the province. (Important - Security) 6) All CDLI midyear exams will be 2 hours and can be administered in one sitting or in two parts, at the discretion of the school and in consultation with the e-teacher. 7) Midyear Exams/Cumulative testing will occur in the following courses: all math two credit courses (M1204, M2204, M3204, M2205, M3205, M3207, M1231, M3231), most science courses (C2202, C3202, C3239, P2204, P3204, Sci1206, Sci1236 B2201, B3201, B3231), most French courses (F2200, F3200), World Geog3202, Can Hist1201, Eng 1201, Eng2201 and Eng3201. It is important to note that it is a school responsibility to ensure that graphing calculators are available for students to use during mathematics exams. In addition, Math 3103 will be a Final Exam for those in Slot E. It is worth noting that there is no midyear exam in World History 3201, Environmental Science 3205, NL Studies 2215, Design & Fabrication 2212, Experiencing Music 2200, Applied Music 2206, Art Technologies 1201, Art & Design 3200, Communications Technology 2104/3104, Integrated Systems 1205, Career Development 2201, Writing 2203, French 3201 or Math 3103 (full year). In the case of World History 3201, a comprehensive exam will be given during mid to late February after Unit 3 is completed. As for the others, the nature of these courses and the evaluation scheme in place, more emphasis has been placed on unit testing and/or alternate forms of assessment. In the case of French 3201, an extensive oral interview will occur during the examination period in place of a written evaluation.During the week of Jan 22-Jan 29, e-teachers will not be covering any new material. All online classes will be tutorial and review classes for those students who want to “drop by” and get help. In the case of French 2200 and 3200, every effort will be made to schedule oral interviews during or prior to the examination week during online and/or offline periods. Please remember that Provincial CDLI Tutors (post secondary students) are available during the afternoons and evenings to do free tutoring in most courses. Contact the e-teachers for times these tutors will be available. Students must realize that it is never too early to start preparation for comprehensive cumulative testing.Hopefully this clarifies the CDLI Plan of Attack for Midyear Exams/Cumulative Testing for 2010. Any questions please drop me a line (bob@cdli.ca).

Sept 17, 2009 - Important Dates - Reporting Periods and
Course Drop DeadlineThis year, as with last year, CDLI has
established specific reporting periods based on an analysis of what F2F schools
are doing. Reports will be distributed to schools via the DropBox in the
Portal, something most m-team members will be familiar with. Once they are
placed in the dropbox, they will stay there for 2 weeks to give schools an
opportunity to download these reports.

Progress Reports - First Term will be available on Friday, November 13,
2009.Midterm Reports will be available
on Monday, February 8, 2010.Progress Reports - Second Term will be available on
Friday, April 23, 2010.

These dates refer to CDLI courses which run all year. For the lone semesterized course (Math 3103 in slot E),
there will be two progress reports provided on November 13th and December 11th,
2009.

One more important date to remember is the Course Drop Deadline date which is
set for Friday, October 16, 2009. Like most schools in the province we are
setting this date for mid-October which reflects our view that by this time
students should be settled into courses and working to the best of their
abilities.

CDLI no longer uses a drop form, however, the CDLI Student ADD form will still
be used to accommodate students who may change schools during the year and may
need to pick up online courses.

Thank you for your cooperation.
